How are Weather Maps 1.0 created and what is their resolution?

Barry Carter Apr 10, 2019 11:44PM BST

From what data are the Weather Maps at https://openweathermap.org/api/weathermaps created?

For example, since you only have temperature data from a finite number of points (correct?), how do you fill in the in-between values to create a smooth continuous color map?

Also, what is the resolution of the weather maps? I noticed that, for the temperature map, for zoom level 6 or higher, the results are "pixellated" in the sense that everything is a block of pixels, and there are no single pixels. Are the maps only created to zoom level 5 and all further zoom levels are just pixellated magnifications of the level 5 maps?

Hello,

Thank you for request.

Maps created from model with 0.6 degree grid, and depending on zoom level may be interpolated.

OK, but how do you get the data? Do you have data other than point data?

Hello Barry,

We are collecting few weather models, and calculating our own based on it. We don’t provide higher resolution model yet.
